The Effects of Adolescent Maternal Empowerment Program on Maternal Self - Efficacy and Breastfeeding Behavior in Premature Infants at Sick Newborn, Lampang Hospital

A quasi-experimental two groups pretest-posttest design aimed to study the effects of adolescent maternal empowerment program on maternal self-efficacy and breastfeeding behavior in premature infants at sick newborn, Lampang hospital. The subjects consisted of 28 adolescent mothers with preterm with birth who were admitted into the department of sick newborn at Lampang hospital. The research instruments were: equality divided into control group and experimental group. The control group received routine nursing care while the experimental group received the breastfeeding empowerment program. Research instruments included a breastfeeding empowerment program, maternal self-efficacy questionnaires and breastfeeding behavior. The instruments; adolescent maternal self-efficacy questionnaires and breastfeeding behavior, were verified for reliability and the value of the instruments equaled to 0.86 and 0.80, respectively. Data were statistically including descriptive and independent t-test.
The result found that 1) The mean score of adolescent maternal self-efficacy after receiving the program was significantly higher than that before the program (p<.05). 2) The mean score of adolescent maternal self-efficacy of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<.05). 3) The mean score of breastfeeding behavior of adolescent mothers with preterm infants after receiving experiment was higher before received the program (p<.05). 4) The mean score of breastfeeding behavior of adolescent mothers after receiving the program of the experimental group was no significantly higher than that of the control group. (0.5) Conclusion: These findings indicate that the empowerment program on adolescent maternal with preterm infants in sick newborn at Lampang hospital increases self-efficacy and breastfeeding behavior on maternal in preterm infants.
