Abstract

Contemplative training is rarely used to prepare and develop nursing students and nursing faculty in terms of mindful attention awareness (MAA) and nursing contemplation (NC).  Therefore, this quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of the contemplative training program on MAA and NC among nursing faculty members and nursing students.  The sample included 114 nursing faculty members and first-year nursing students at a selected public nursing college who completed the 11-activity contemplative training program.  This sample consisted of 25 nursing faculty members and 89 first-year nursing students.  Data were collected from December 2021 to February 2022, using three research instruments: a 4-item demographic questionnaire, a 15-item MAA questionnaire, and a 23-item NC questionnaire.  The questionnaires were tested for reliability, showing a Cronbach’s Alpha of .82 and .87, respectively.  Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and dependent t-tests.

          The findings showed that the post-mean MAA score (  = 73.86, SD = 12.28) and NC score (  = 63.06, SD = 26.17) of nursing faculty members were higher than those of pre-mean scores (  = 68.98, SD = 12.45,  = 48.37, SD = 26.17, p = .001).  Likewise, nursing students’ post-mean MAA score (  = 76.64, SD = 9.72) and NC (  = 76.72, SD = 31.16) were significantly higher, compared to those pre-mean scores (  = 66.16, SD = 11.57, M = 50.88, SD = 35.66, p = .001).  Thus, contemplative training can enhance MAA and NC and should be used to develop competencies among nursing students and faculty.
