Measuring Minority Stress and Mental health among LGBTQ People

Abstract

          This is the cross-sectional study that made to assess sexual minority stress and mental health among LGBTQ community and to explore factors associated with it. The survey was conducted in 111 LGBTQ in Lampang. Participants completed self-report surveys that included basic information, stresses experienced by LGBTQ people, and Thai mental health indication (TMHI-15).

            According to the information, 32.4% of participants had poor mental health. People with mental health problems were more likely to be lesbian, 20-30 years old, students/Bachelor’s degree, and to have income <10,000 baht per month. The participant’s characteristics were not related to mental health. There were many experiences of LGBTQ. The most problems were harassment and discrimination, vicarious trauma, vigilance, family of origin, and isolation respectively. The problems which are associated with mental health were experienced in parenting (p=0.002), isolation (p=0.008), and vigilance (p=0.028). In conclusion, about 1/3 of LGBTQ people had poor mental health. The general characteristics were not linked to mental health. Stresses experienced related to poor mental health among LGBTQ people. Although, this study required past experiences of that LGBTQ. It may be causing the bias recalling information. Suggestion in further study, it should be needed larger samples and define experience more clearly.
