Abstract

Fall is a common problem among the elders, affecting the quality of life and the economy. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with fall risk among elderly people in Lampang Province. Fall risk was accessed by Timed up and go test according to the Thai Elderly Fall Screening Guideline. This study is a cross-sectional study of 3,600 elderly people in Lampang Province between October 2019 and September 2020. Data were collected from the electronic medical record. The prevalence of fall risk was evaluated using descriptive statistics. The factors associated with fall risk were analyzed using fisher exact test and multiple logistic regression.

The prevalence of fall risk was found to be 3.50 percent. Females were more 1.86 times likely to have a fall risk (ORadj=1.86, 95% CI 1.13 – 3.03), compared to males. Osteoarthritis risk was more 80.16 times likely to have a fall risk (ORadj=80.16, 95% CI 50.11 - 128.23), compared to those who were without osteoarthritis risk. And the home-bound elderly performed the activities of daily living (ADL) were more 12.96 times likely to have a fall risk (ORadj=12.96, 95% CI 4.16 - 40.32), compared to the social-bound elderly. Public health personnel should provide established strategies to take care and prevent fall among elderly people who have fall risk, especially in females, risk of osteoarthritis and the ADL of home-bound.
