This study was a quasi-experimental study with single-group measurement before and after the experiment. The purpose was to study the effect of the hypertension behavior modification program on knowledge and health-care behaviors in high-risk groups of hypertensive disease. Participants were 35-year-old patients with high blood pressure levels of more than 130/85- 139/89 at Ban Na Yang Health Promoting Hospital in Sopprap District, Lampang Province. Power analysis was used to calculate the sample size, with the effect size was set at 0.6 at a moderate level. The significance level was 0.05 and the statistical power analysis with open table was 0.8. The sample size of 24 people was chosen to be at least 20% incomplete, with 30 people recruited through purposive sampling. Research tools consisted of two parts: 1) the experimental tool, which included a program for changing health behaviors in high blood pressure group, and 2) the collected tool, which included a knowledge questionnaire. The statistics were used in the data analysis: Descriptive statistics and Paired t- test.
As a result, the sample group had average knowledge scores and self-care behaviors for hypertension after joining the program, compared to higher levels before joining the program. Furthermore, the participants’ food consumption had a statistically significant lower salinity level than before entering the program, with p< .001. This can be used to adjust health behaviors in at-risk patients in order to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.
