Abstract

This study was a quasi-experimental research. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of health promotion program on self-care agency in patients breast cancer treated with chemotherapy. Sample was thirty post-operation breast cancer patients who treated with chemotherapy during March 2020 to July 2020, and then were assigned to either the experimental or control groups (15 patients to each group). The experimental group received the promoting self-care program that was developed based on Orem’s nursing system theory, while the control group received usual nursing care only. Data of pre and post intervention and control group were collected using self-care questionnaire. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.

The results showed that the quality of life and self-care behaviors of the patients after receiving the program were significantly better than those before receiving the program. The study found that the experimental group had level more self-care agency after receiving health promotion program at significance level of < 0.001. The mean score of self-care agency in experimental group was significantly higher than the control group (p <0.05). This finding could be used as a guideline for improving nursing quality and health promotion models for other cancer patients.
