Relationship Between Knowledge and Attitudes on Behaviors of Cigarette Smokers in Order to Protect Family and Community Members from Secondhand Smoke in Sri Dong Yen Sub-district, Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai Province

The purposes of this research were to study about knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of cigarette smokers in order to protect family and community members from secondhand smoke, and to examine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes on behaviors of cigarette smokers in order to protect family and community members from secondhand smoke in Sri Dong Yen Sub-district, Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai Province. The samples were 120 smokers, aged 18 years old or over, who have two or more family members. The data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, and calculated Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The results revealed that most of the smokers are male (90.8%), aged between 41-59 years old (51.7%). In the past three months, respiratory illness was the major disease of family members of the smokers (31.7%). The smokers had good level of knowledge (80.8 percent), moderate level of attitudes (70.8%), and moderate level of behaviors (63.3%). The findings indicated that knowledge was positively associated with behaviors of cigarette smokers in order to protect family and community members from secondhand smoke with statistically significance difference (r = 0.352, P < 0.01).
Therefore, the health care facilities, related department, and network partners in the community should organize training in order to improve smokers’ perceptions about the severity of disease caused by secondhand smoke, and set measures for restriction of access and available to cigarette within households and community.
