Experience of Repeat Pregnancy Prevention among Adolescents

This research aimed to examine the experience of adolescents who have tried repeat pregnancy prevention in kanchanaburi, Thailand. The 2 key informants were consisted of 15 participants who are currently pregnant or who used to be pregnant during their teenage life; and 5 nurses who provide family planning services for adolescent females. Purposive sampling was used for this study. The research instruments used in-depth interview with recording. The data were analyzed by Hermeneutic Phenomenology.
The findings revealed 4 main themes, as follows: 1) When adolescent miss out contraception, they are given both physical and mental family care and support. 2) A dolescents take contraceptive irregularly such as taking oral contraceptive pills for females and using condom intermittently for males. 3) The reasons for prevention of repeat pregnancy in adolescent females are they look themselves as a young and that they should not have children yet; and they want to complete their studies in order to find work to support their children; and 4) Adolescents are confident in choosing to prevent repeat pregnancy with Norplant contraceptives.
Recommendation: The education about adolescent pregnancy prevention should be encouraged continuously. It is recommended to promote the prevention of repeat pregnancy with the use of oral contraceptives as the main type. Moreover, family members are encouraged to take a part in preventing pregnancy for positive effect on the quality of life of teenage pregnancy in the future.
