Abstract

The nursing process is a potential tool for professional nurses. However, nursing students do not understand how to apply the nursing process to nursing practice. This is due to the fact that the nursing process requires the use of nursing knowledge, nursing theory, and scientific methods, including analyzing data, summarizing nursing problems, and developing nursing diagnosis. Nevertheless, the nursing diagnosis is a statement indicating several different potential problems a patient may face. Thus, nurses should be concerned a number of factors may contribute to many health problems in each person. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the teaching and learning about conceptual concepts, theories and a nursing process by using case studies and real situations on the wards.Samples were 147 a 2nd year nursing students, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Chiang Mai who enrolled in concepts, theory and process of nursing class in semester 1, Academic Year 2018, and had no experience about learning in the clinical setting. The research instruments were 1) the instructional management plan by using case studies as a simulation; 2) teaching plan by using real case studies; and 3) the evaluation form to measure the ability of nursing students in developing nursing care plans. The reliability of three instruments were 0.91,0.91 and 0.61, respectively. A pair t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted to evaluate the ability of nursing students before and after attending the program.
The results showed that after finishing the program, the average score of nursing planning ability in nursing students had significant improved than before participating the program (p-value <0.001). It can be seen that the teaching methods by using a case study analysis and practicing a nursing process in real situations could be beneficial to nursing students’ ability for developing nursing care plans.
