Self-esteem among Old Persons Participating the Elderly School

Comprehensive understanding on self-esteem among elderly persons and the activities that enhance self-esteem can develop the curriculum in elderly schools, and it can address psychological and social needs. This qualitative research aimed to illustrate the old persons’ perception of self-esteem and to study the activities that enhance self-esteem among old persons who participate in the elderly school. An in-depth interview was conducted to 12 older persons, and the data were analyzed through a thematic analysis.
The results found that, the self-esteem of older persons is related to a positive self-perception, including; 1) respect in oneself in terms of having a good health, capabilities, and income earning, 2) supporting others and contributing to the society, and 3) being treated by others with care and acceptance. In addition, their self-esteem was improved when they participated in the activities that promote good relationship, accepting their health state, learning about achievement, contribution to the society, and having fun. With this, it is concluded that elderly schools should aim to provide programs and activities that encourage self-esteem of older persons which will improve their mental health and quality of life.
