The Efficacy of Thai Traditional Medicine on Knee Osteoarthritis in Patients with Primary Knee Osteoarthritis
Keywords:
Primary knee osteoarthritis, Thai traditional medicineAbstract
The research was aimed to study the effectiveness of Thai traditional medicine in patients with primary knee osteoarthritis at Ngao Hospital, Lampang province. The quasi-experimental study was conducted based on one-groups pretest-posttest design of which the subjects, aged 50 years and above, consisted of 107 patients with primary knee osteoarthritis. The patients had been diagnosed and were being treated by Medical Rehabilitation Unit, Department of Thai Traditional Medicine, Ngao Hospital.
The data of patients’ general information as well as the clinical treatment and rehabilitation were analyzed and illustrated descriptively in frequency, percentage and standard deviation (S.D.). Besides, to determine the differences of the mean scores regarding levels of knee osteoarthritis, the method of Modified Western Ontario and McMaster University (Modified WOMAC) gained before and after therapy was applied. Additionally, the inferential statistics including t-test and ANOVA were used to compare mean scores gained from pain levels, stiffness, and knee functional abilities in those subjects with primary knee osteoarthritis.
The results illustrated that the subjects consisted of 75 females and 32 males. Moreover, the diagnosis for three times after the therapy and the follow up after a week revealed that Thai traditional medicine may significantly decreased pain level in knee and stiffness, and knee functional abilities statistically significantly improved (p<.001). Interestingly, having compared the scores between the WOMAC and individual’s factors such as BMI and periods of knee pain symptoms, there was no statistically significant difference in those scores after the therapy.
Thai traditional medicine showed prompt reduction of pain and functional improvement; as a result, this safe alternative medicine should be recommended to patients with primary knee osteoarthritis. It is suggested that the treatment be conducted based on their availability and normal lifestyles to improve the quality of life of these patients.
