The Effects of a Self-Efficacy Enhancement Program on Post-Operative Self-Care Behaviors in Patients with Maxillofacial Injury
Keywords:

This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare the mean postoperative self-care behavior score of patients with maxillofacial injuries before and after the intervention, both within and between groups. A total of 50 participants were selected through purposive sampling and assigned to either an experimental group or a control group, with 25 participants in each group. The experimental group received the self-efficacy enhancement program for 6 weeks, while the control group received standard nursing care. The research instruments included the self-efficacy enhancement program, a demographic data record form, and a postoperative self-care behavior questionnaire. Content validity was established, with scale-level content validity indices of 1.00 for the demographic data record form and 0.98 for the postoperative self-care behavior questionnaire. The program demonstrated item-objective congruence values ranging from 0.67 to 1.00, and the questionnaire showed acceptable reliability, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.81. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests.
The findings showed that, within the groups, the experimental group that received the program had a significantly higher mean postoperative self-care behavior score after the intervention than before the intervention, whereas the control group showed no statistically significant difference. Between the groups, after the intervention, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean postoperative self-care behavior scores than the control group. This shows that the self-efficacy enhancement program was effective in promoting postoperative self-care behaviors among patients with maxillofacial injuries. Therefore this program may be integrated into standard nursing care to enhance postoperative self-care behaviors in this patient population.
