This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a program designed to enhance rational drug-use literacy on rational drug use literacy of village health volunteer. The study involved 62 village health volunteers from the Dong Hong Hae Health Promoting Hospital and Pathum Family Doctor Clinic in the Pathum Subdistrict, Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a comparison group, each consisting of 31 individuals. The experimental group received a four-week literacy enhancement program, while the comparison group continued with their usual duties. The tools used in this study included: 1) a rational drug use literacy enhancement program based on Nutbeam's health literacy framework, validated by experts with a content validity index of 1.00, and 2) a Rational Drug Use Literacy Assessment for Thai People from the Health Systems Research Institute, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.85. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and the Mann-Whitney U test.
The findings showed that before participating in the program, both the experimental and comparison groups had insufficient levels of rational drug use literacy. After the program, the experimental group achieved sufficient levels of rational drug use literacy, whereas the comparison group remained at an insufficient level. Additionally, after the program, the experimental group showed a significant overall increase in rational drug use literacy compared to their pre-program levels and the comparison group, with statistical significance at the 0.05 level.
