Abstract

This predictive correlational research aimed to examine the sociodemographic factors, burden, and quality of life influencing the care potential of family caregiving for survivors of stroke. The sample consisted of 256 stroke patients’ caregivers living in Rangsit Municipality, Thanyaburi District, Pathum Thani Province. They were selected using purposive sampling method. The research instruments were composed of questionnaires on 1) sociodemographic data, 2) burden, 3) quality of life, and 4) potential care. Using CVI for instrument assessment, the questionnaires’ validity values were 0.97, 1.0, and 0.92, and their Alpha Cronbach’s coefficient reliability values were 0.93, 0.92, and 0.92, respectively. The data was analyzed using Pearson’s product moments, chi-square tests, and stepwise multiple regression statistics.

The research results revealed that most of the caregivers were female, with a mean age of 54.36 years and their highest education level was primary school. Additionally, most of them were not working and the family income was less than 10,000 baht per month. as the most common relationship between the caregivers and care-receivers was husband and wife. Most of the caregivers had two or more comorbid diseases, with the most common being high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia. Regarding the caregivers’ obesity risk factors, their poor habits included eating salty and sweet foods and not exercising. The stroke patients’ problems the caregivers worried about the most were impaired physical movement, mental problems, and incomprehensible communication. The analysis revealed the burden was at a moderate level, they had good quality of life, and a moderate of potential care. The influential factors predicting the care potential of caregivers were quality of life and number of daughters. Together, these factors can predict 19.30 percent (p< .001) of the variance. The results of this study provide significant information for developing and improving the care potential of caregiving for survivors of stroke.
