Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research with a one-group, pretest-posttest design was aimed to compare the difference in the mean scores for knowledge and substance abuse prevention behavior of students before and after participating in the life skills development program. The sample was selected by purposive sampling and consisted of thirty secondary school students studying in grades 1-3 at the educational opportunity expansion school in Phetchaburi province. Research instruments consisted of the: 1) demographic data questionnaires, 2) drugs prevention knowledge test, 3) drugs prevention behavior questionnaire, and 4) life skills development program. The four-week trial period consisted of activities to increase value awareness of oneself and others, developing knowledge about the dangers and prevention of substance abuse, developing analytical thinking skills, decision making and creative problem solving, dealing with emotions and stress, developing skills in building relationships with others, and evaluating results. The instruments were validated by experts and were found to have an index of item objective congruence (IOC) of 0.67-1.00. Reliability was tested using Kuder-Richardson (KR-20) and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, which were .69 and .86, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including: frequencies, percentages, averages and standard deviations, and paired t-tests.

The research results found that the experimental group had statistically significantly higher mean scores for knowledge and substance abuse prevention behaviors than before the experiment (p<0.05). These findings show that using life skills development programs helps students improve their knowledge and substance abuse prevention behavior. Therefore, schools, together with healthcare providers, should implement the developed program to prevent and reduce substance abuse use in schools.
