This Quasi-experimental design, one group, Pretest Posttest Design research aimed to study the effects of the “Knowing, Creation, Happiness” mental health promotion program on the mental health literacy and happiness of older adults. The program was developed by applying Orem’s Self-care Theory, mental health literacy, happiness, and the 5-dimension happiness guide concepts. The one-week health promotion program included four activities, specifically: 1) Do you know who is happy, 2) Why happiness is important, 3) The secrets of creating happiness, and 4) The ways to make yourself happy. The participants were the 26 older adults in Nakhon Ratchasima Province who were selected by simple sampling. The instruments used in this study consisted of the mental health literacy scale and the Thai happiness indicator. The instruments’ Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were at .81 and .89, respectively. The data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics, Friedman’s Tests and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests.
The research results revealed that, after participating in the one-week program: 1) the participants’ mental health literacy scores differed statistically at least one pair with the participants’ mental health literacy scores being significantly higher than before (p<.05) 2) the participants’ happiness scores also differed statistically at least one pair with the participants’ happiness scores being significantly higher after participating in the program than before (p<.05). These findings show that the “Knowing, Creation, Happiness” mental health promotion program has been proven to be practical and could be applied to enhance mental health literacy and happiness in older adults.
