Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) in the elderly population is a major public health concern in many countries. It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage and related to other risk factors, especially being overweight and over use of knee joints. Elderly people with OA require total knee arthroplasty (TKA) when treatments or rehabilitation can no longer improve the knee’s joint function. Currently, TKA is considered the most effective treatment because it improves the quality of life of these patients. In the postoperative phase, to enhance recovery after TKA, guidelines have been adopted to reduce a patients’ recovery time; reduce their admitted stay in the hospital, reduce complications after the surgery, reduce stressors, and allow them return home with continuing physical rehabilitation.

However, the early recovery after TKA can be challenging because it is a transitional period that requires patients to adapt, which may result in clinical risks or complications. Thus, the purpose of this academic article is to reflect the concept and guidelines of enhanced recovery among elderly patients after TKA, review clinical risks and postoperative complications, and discuss nurse’s roles in caring for these patients. By understanding the concepts, roles, and competencies of nurses in regard to clinical risk management, patients’ recovery can be enhanced in a more effective way.
