Abstract

This is a descriptive research with the aim of exploring health information needs, satisfaction with nursing care, and functional ability among patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. As for the conceptual framework, the study was conducted based on Donabedian's health care quality model. The samples were 85 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty admitted at the orthopedic ward of a university hospital in Bangkok from 19 January 2015 – 29 April 2016. The samples were selected by purposive sampling based on the following inclusion criteria: being female and male patients diagnosed having knee osteoarthritis and underwent total knee arthroplasty for the first time; being conscious; having no cognitive impairment; and being able to understand Thai. The interview method using the four sets of questionnaires was employed for data collection. The data analysis was performed by using descriptive statistics and Paired t-test. The significance level was determined at .05. The findings revealed that patients’ overall health information needs were at a rather high level before and after the surgery. Patients mostly needed health information on surgical wound care. Their overall health information needs after the surgery reduced from before the surgery with a statistical significance (p < .05). Patients’ overall satisfaction with nursing care was at a high-highest level, while their satisfaction with nursing care in respect of professional competency achieved the first rank. In addition, patients’ overall functional ability was rather good. In conclusion, the findings of the study could be applied to plan how to provide health information according to patients’ needs, as well as nursing care for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty in order to enhance efficiency of nursing care and health care services.
