Abstract

Nursing communication significantly influences nursing outcomes. This descriptive research aimed to explore communication behaviors among professional nurses working at general hospitals in Phayao Province. There were 209 nurses invited to participate in the study using stratified random sampling technique.The nurse communication behavior was measured using a questionnaire consisting of nurses to nurses, nurses to patients, and nurses to multidisciplinary team communication behaviors.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.           

Findings indicated that generally, communication behaviors among professional nurse was at the high level.  This included communication behavior between nurses to nurses ( = 3.93, SD = 0.55), nurses to patients ( = 4.04, SD = 0.62) and nurses to multidisciplinary team ( = 4.00, SD = 0.54). Data analysis showed that the lowest mean communication score between nurses to nurses ( =3.90, SD = 0.53) and nurses to multidisciplinary team ( =3.99, SD = 0.56) was providing a clear information. However, the lowest mean communication score between nurses to patients was getting information without bias ( = 4.02, SD = 0.54). Research findings support that nursing administrators should promote communication skills among professional nurses particularly in providing nursing information.  In addition, nursing education institutes should provide communication skills training for nurses.
