Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem, marital relationship, and parenting stress among first-time adolescent mothers. The participants were 85 first-time adolescent mothers at 4-6 weeks postpartum receiving services at the family planning clinic at Khon Kaen Hospital and reproductive health clinics at Health Promotion Center 7 Khon Kaen from May to September 2017. The participants were selected according to the inclusion criteria. The research instruments consisted of 1) personal data form 2) Self-esteem Questionnaire 3) Marital Relationship Questionnaire and 4) Parental Stress Scale Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation and Spearman's rank coefficient correlation were used to analyze the data.

The results revealed that 1) The majority of adolescent mothers, 82.40%, had a high level of self-esteem with a mean score of 3.37 (S.D. = 0.39) 2) Most adolescent mothers, 52.90%, had a pretty good level of marital relationship with a mean score of 3.87 (S.D. = 0.56)  3) The majority of adolescent mothers, 80%, had a low level of parenting stress with a mean score of 36.83 (S.D. = 9.02)  4)  Self-esteem was low negatively correlated with parenting stress (r = -.27,p <.05)  and 5) marital relationship was moderate negatively correlated with parenting stress (r = -.35, p <.01).

These findings suggest that first-time adolescent mothers should be assessed for self-esteem, marital relationship, and parenting stress. Nurse-midwives should develop strategies to enhance self-esteem and marital relationship in order to decrease parenting stress among first-time adolescent mothers.
