The intention of driving motorcycles through traffic lights among Ubon Ratchathani University’s students

Abstract

The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study were to explore the intention of driving motorcycles through the traffic lights of the students, academic year 2018, Ubon Ratchathani University. Data were collected by using the questionnaire from 268 of third year students and were analyzed using descriptive statistic (Frequency and Percentage) and inferential statistic (Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U Test). The results indicated that 6.0 percent of students in the three study groups including Department of Health Sciences, Science Technology and the Humanities-Social Sciences have the intention of driving motorcycles through the traffic lights statistically significant difference (p-value < 0.001) and found that the median of the intention of driving through the traffic lights between Health Science and Humanities-Social Science students was statistically significant difference (p-value = 0.048). In addition, this study found that having a motorcycle license and a having motorcycle pillion were correlated with the intention of driving motorcycles through the traffic lights with statistically significant (p-value = 0.02 and 0.01). Therefore, the relevant agencies should have training and encouraging a motorcycle license and campaign about the awareness of road traffic injuries in order to allow students to follow the rules more effectively and to enhance knowledge and understanding of safe driving among all groups of the students.
