Objectives This research was to examine the validity of the HCR-20 : Violence Risk Assessment Scheme (Thai version).
Materials and methods HCR-20 was translated into Thai by researcher and back translated by three English experts. After being checked and verified the meaning
of the technical terms used by one psychiatrist and one psychologist, the researcher adjusted discrepancies accordingly. The HCR-20-Thai version was tried out with 30 samples for index of inter-rater reliability. Then it was used among the sample of 100 in-patients of Galya Rajanangarindra Institute to test its internal consistency reliability. The incidence of violence outcome was determined among 83 sample cases after following up for 6 weeks. The validity and cut›off score were analyzed by Receiver operating characteristic curve.
Results The index of inter-rater reliability was acceptable (0.72). The internal consistency reliability coefficient of the overall HCR-20 were good (alpha = 0.86).
The appropriate cut-off score was 21.
Conclusion HCR-20 Thai version can be used for assessing risk of violence among Thai psychiatric patients.
