Abstract

Objective  To evaluate the psychometric property of the Thai version of Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) in psychiatric caregivers.

Materials and methods  There were 2 steps. First, translation the English version into Thai with permission from The Mapi Research Institute. Then, psychometric tests were carried out in family caregivers of schizophrenia, dementia and epilepsy patients attending Srithanya Hospital. Structural validity by exploratory and confirmatory structure analysis was analyzed by using Mplus. Pearson’s correlation was analyzed to validate the concurrent validity with the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HAD).

Results  There were 355 family caregivers of psychiatric cases divided into schizophrenia, dementia and epilepsy as 203, 101 and 51 respectively. The measurement model consisted of 3 domains namely impact (item 1,7-10) stress (item 2 - 6) and care (item 11&12) The goodness of fit indices were acceptable after  adjusted model. Factor loadings were between 0.75 – 0.95. Cronbach’s alpha was excellence at 0.88

Conclusion The Thai version of 12 item-ZBI had 3 dimensional structure with an excellence internal consistency that could be evaluated burden of family caregivers of psychiatric patients.  It had moderate significant correlation with the HAD.
