Abstract

Objective: To review the roles of nursing personnel in mental health care and promotion for individuals affected by crisis and events, and evidence-based practices for reducing acute stress reactions and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted using academic databases including PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and ThaiJO, covering research, academic articles, as well as manuals and guidelines from international organizations. Documents published between 2015 and 2025 and relevant to nursing roles in mental health care for individuals affected by crises or internationally recognized practice guidelines were selected.

Results: Twenty-six publications were included in the review. The findings highlighted the critical roles of nurses across the emergency, acute, and recovery phases of crisis management. Their key responsibilities include mental health risk assessment and screening, basic psychological support, psychoeducation, family support, and facilitating recovery through evidence-based interventions. Major approaches supporting nursing practice included psychological first aid (PFA), trauma-informed care (TIC), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP). However, important gaps remain in culturally appropriate PTSD screening and care approaches for the Thai context, referral systems, continuity of care, and mental health support for frontline healthcare providers.

Conclusion: Nurses play a pivotal role in mental health care for individuals experiencing crisis and traumatic events. Strengthening nurses’ mental health competencies and developing culturally appropriate care approaches can strengthen mental health systems preparedness for future crises.
