The Thai version of the Walsh family resilience questionnaire for parents of children and adolescents with leukemia

Objective: To adapt and validate the Walsh family resilience questionnaire (WFRQ) for Thai parents of children and adolescents with leukemia.
Methods: The WFRQ was translated into Thai and adapted to be contextually relevant to a family dealing with leukemia. The index of item-objective congruence (IOC) of each item was evaluated by three experts. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested among parents taking care of children and adolescents aged 0 - 18 years with leukemia by calculating the item-total correlation coefficients and Cronbach’s alpha.
Results: The translated and adapted WFRQ consisted of 32 items with three domains (belief systems, organization patterns, and communication and problem-solving). Ten items with the IOC values less than 0.50 and three items with the item-total correlation coefficients less than 0.20 were removed due to redundancy and low discriminant power. The reliability testing among 30 participants revealed that the 19-item family resilience questionnaire for parents of children and adolescents with leukemia had the item-total correlation coefficients between 0.23 - 0.75 and Cronbach’s alpha of 0.84.
Conclusion: The family resilience questionnaire developed in this study has acceptable validity and reliability. It could serve as a self-assessment tool and a guideline for services to promote psychosocial well-being among families of children and adolescents with leukemia.
