The development of geriatric psychiatry in Thailand

Objective: To review the development of geriatric psychiatry in Thailand, especially the foundation of the Thai Society for Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry (TSGN) and the fellowship training in subspecialty of geriatric psychiatry.
Methods: PubMed, ThaiJO, and website databases were searched for literatures published from 1981 to July 2023. The search terms included geriatric psychiatry, training, Thai society, and Thailand. All relevant materials and direct experience of the author were reviewed.
Results: Geriatric psychiatry in Thailand was perhaps originated in 2006 by the establishment of the Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry Interest Group (GenPIG), which was later upgraded to be the Thai Society for Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry (TSGN). Regarding the subspecialty training on geriatric psychiatry, the 2-year curriculum was first proposed in 2010 and was approved by the Thai Medical Council in 2018 after the public hearing. There are currently five training institutes with the capacity to accept a total of 11 fellowship trainees per year. Up to August 2023, 42 psychiatrists had received the Diploma Board of Subspecialty in Geriatric Psychiatry, with the ratio of geriatric psychiatrist and Thai population aged 65 years and over of 1 per 205,615.
Conclusion: Geriatric psychiatry in Thailand has been developed through the regular activities of TSGN and the establishment of a geriatric psychiatry fellowship training program. With the growing numbers of geriatric psychiatrists and TSGN members each year, a brighter future for geriatric psychiatry and the quality of life in psychogeriatric cases in Thailand are promising.
