Factors associated with burnout syndrome among village health volunteers during COVID-19 pandemic in an urban area of Chonburi province

Objective: To estimate the level and identify associated factors, including volunteer motivation and work life quality, of burnout among village health volunteers (VHVs).
Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed among VHVs, selected by systematic random sampling, at a sub-district health promotion hospital in Chonburi province in December 2022. Questionnaires included sociodemographics, volunteer motivation scale, work life quality scale, and adapted Maslach burnout inventory. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.
Results: A total of 168 respondents were found to have low levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization while having a high level of reduced personal accomplishment. Most of them perceived the benefits of working as a volunteer, while only half were satisfied with their work life quality. Emotional exhaustion was negatively correlated with work life quality. Depersonalization was associated with the presence of current primary occupation. Reduced personal accomplishment was associated with monthly family income and negatively correlated with volunteer motivation and work life quality.
Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, VHVs in an urban community experience a lack of fulfillment in voluntary tasks despite awareness of the value of their work. There should be promotion of quality of life at work, especially in terms of essential skills and resources, relationships with networks and communities, and work-life balance, to prevent and reduce burnout from volunteer work.
