Risk factors of repeat suicidal behavior among psychiatric patients in Chumphon province, Thailand

Objective: To determine the risk factors of repeat suicidal behaviors among psychiatric patients with previous suicidal behaviors.
Methods: The secondary data of psychiatric patients with previous suicidal behaviors were retrieved from the Chumphon provincial office database. Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact test were used to determine the relationship between factors and repeat suicidal behavior. Binary logistic regression was used to determine predictors of repeat suicidal behaviors.
Results: Of 136 subjects, 33.1% (95% CI = 25.27 - 41.67) reattempted suicide. Age group and having underlying diseases were associated with repeat suicidal behavior. Logistic regression analysis showed that those having the underlying physical disease were 2.88 times (95% CI = 0.95 - 8.74) more likely to repeat suicide behaviors than those without underlying physical diseases.
Conclusion: Psychiatric patients have a high rate of repeat suicidal behaviors, particularly those with comorbid physical conditions. This high-risk group of patients should receive suitable care plans for suicide prevention and enhancing their quality of life.
