Cross-cultural translation, validity, and reliability of the Thai version of the relative stress scale among relative caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment

Objective: To translate and assess the validity and reliability of the Thai version of the relative stress scale (Thai-RSS) among relative caregivers of older adults with cognitive problems.
Methods: The English version of the RSS was independently translated into the Thai version by two bilingual experts. The RSS in Thai was then back-translated into English by another bilingual translator to be compared with the original English version. The content validity of the prefinal Thai-RSS was evaluated by five experts. Two waves of cross-sectional studies were conducted two weeks apart to examine the psychometric properties of the final Thai-RSS among 100 relative caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment in a community in Suphan Buri province. The exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed using data from the first and second waves, respectively. Intraclass correlation and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were calculated to evaluate the external (test-retest) and internal reliability of the Thai-RSS, respectively.
Results: The 15-item Thai-RSS was categorized into three factors; 1) personal distress, 2) degree of life upset, and 3) negative feelings toward the care recipient. It demonstrated a content validity index of 0.92. The measurement model showed an acceptable model fit (RMSEA = 0.08, χ2/df =1.70, CFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.91). Intraclass correlation and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for each factor were between 0.96 - 0.98 and 0.89 - 0.91, respectively.
Conclusion: The Thai-RSS demonstrates good validity and reliability. It could be used to assess stress in Thai caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment.
