Epidemiology of impulse control disorders in Thailand: Thai national mental health survey 2013

Objectives: To study the prevalence, associated factors, psychiatric comorbidities, and service utilization of impulse control disorders in Thailand.
Methods: This study used data from the Thai national mental health survey 2013 among 4,727 Thai adults aged 18 years and over selected through stratified four-stage sampling. Participants were interviewed by using the Thai version of world mental health–composite international diagnostic interview 3.0 (WMH-CIDI 3.0). Data were analyzed with weighted calculations to determine the prevalence presented as percentage with standard error (SE). Related factors of impulsive control disorders were analyzed by using the chi-square test.
Results: The lifetime prevalence of impulse control disorders was 3.5% (SE = 0.4), with the highest prevalence in the southern region at 4.8% (SE = 0.4). The factors related to impulse control disorders were gender, age, annual income, insomnia, any psychiatric disorder, suicidal behaviors, alcohol consumption, drug use, severe stress life events, and financial status of the family. The most commonly reported psychiatric comorbidities among those with impulse control disorders included alcohol use disorders (46.4%, SE = 4.3), psychotic-like experiences (17.1%, SE = 4.6), anxiety disorders (15.8%, SE = 4.0), and drug use disorders (15.8%, SE = 4.7). Among those with impulse control disorders, 15.9% (SE = 3.1) received services from the health professionals and 4.2% (SE = 2.9) received services from non-health professionals.
Conclusion: Impulse control disorders in Thailand are highly comorbid with psychiatric and substance use disorders. However, most affected individuals do not have access to services. Therefore, screening and specialized treatment of impulsive control disorders should be emphazied to prevent negative consequences.
