Mental health status and self-esteem in pharmacy students, Rangsit University

Abstract

                 Objectives  To determine mental health status, to compare mental health status and to identify predicting factors of mental health status between pharmaceutical science students and pharmaceutical care students.
                 Materials and methods  This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the 1st - 5th pharmacy students. The questionnaire consisted of personal information, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and General Health Questionnaire-28. Statistic analysis was performed using Chi-square test, logistic regression and the Pearson correlation coefficient where appropriate.
                 Results  A total of 591 students with the similar proportion in two groups were participated in the study. The characteristics of both groups were not significantly different except the distribution of academic years (p<0.01) and need for program transferring (p<0.01). The majority of student were female (73.8%) and having normal self-esteem (92.5%). There were 36.9% of the students having poor mental health status and most of them were in the 4th academic year. The proportion of students with poor mental health status were significantly higher in pharmaceutical science students than pharmaceutical care students in all academic years (p<0.01) as well as in the 4th academic year (p<0.01). The predicting
factors of mental health status were low self-esteem (OR=3.64), being the 4th year student (OR=3.64), scholarship recipient (OR=2.83), female (OR=2.26), need for faculty transferring (OR=2.26) and pharmaceutical science program (OR=1.92). There was a significant negative correlation between mental health status and self-esteem (r=-0.50, p<0.01).
                  Conclusion There were 36.9% of the students with poor mental health. Some predicting factors can be modified in order to improve mental health status. The further study should be aim to identify the guideline for promoting mental health status among pharmacy students.
