Objective To examine the effectiveness of resilience enhancing program (REP) on resilience
level and depression among widows affected by south Thailand insurgency.
Material and methods A quasi-experimental research was done with 70 widows who voluntarily
participated in the study. The participants were divided equally into treatment group, which received
REP, and control group, which received regular caring activities. The research instruments were REP,
resilience quotient assessment form (RQ), and the Hamilton rating scale for depression (HRSD). The
outcome measures were done immediately after the program finished, one month, and three months
follow up. The data analysis was done using repeated measures ANOVA and simple regression analysis.
Results After three months follow up, the RQ score was increased significantly, and the HRSD
score was decreased significantly in treatment group when compared with the control group. While the
RQ score and HRSD score did not change significantly in the control group.
Conclusion REP was effective in enhancing resilience quotient and reducing depression in
widows affected by south Thailand insurgency. The REP should be recommended to those who work
in nursing and mental health healing profession in order to prevent, support, and rehabilitate widows
and other groups who may need to enhance their resilience skills.
