Abstract

Objectives To determine the rate and associated factors of mental health service utilization and reasons for not receiving service among individuals with 12 month mental disorders.
Materials and methods This study used data from Thai national mental health survey 2013. It was cross-sectional study among Thai non-institutionalized population aged 18 years old and over. Analyses were conducted among those who have mental disorders in 12 months from World Mental Health-Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0 (WMHCIDI 3.0). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Weighted proportions were estimated and presented with percentage, standard errors and chi-square tests. Strength of the associations was presented with odds ratio.
Results The sample was 384, who met major mental disorders in previous 12 months, most were male (53.9%) and 40-54 year olds (37.2%). Only 6 percent had accessed to mental health services, most of which were provided by general practitioners or non-psychiatric specialists. Factors related to increased mental health services utilization were female, age more than 40 years old, having chronic medical condition and drug use disorders. Most of those who did not seek help from mental health services thought he/she didn’t have a problem (62.6%).
Conclusion Most of individuals with mental disorders did not seek help from mental health service. The reason for not receiving mental health services was because they do not agree or unawareness of their psychiatric problems.
