Abstract

Objectives To develop and evaluate the model of rehabilitation services for patients with chronic schizophrenia.
Materials and methods This research was a research and development study divided into two stages. First, the rehabilitation programs were developed. Second the integrated program was applied among chronic schizophrenic patients. There were 2 main groups of samples in order to pilot the developed programs and evaluate the integrated program. The fi rst groups were fi ve 12- case pilot groups and the second groups were 40 chronic schizophrenic cases whom simple random equally allocated into 2 groups, i.e., the study and the control group respectively. The control group received regular nursing cares. The instruments were the functional ability, self-esteem and negative symptom scales. Descriptive analyses were used and mean scores of the scales between two groups were compared by t-test.
Results First, there were 5 rehabilitation programs i.e., cognitive rehabilitation, social skills, work skills, volunteer activities and aungalung practicing which were validated by experts’ opinion prior to test in each pilot group. Second, the integrated rehabilitation program for chronic schizophrenia patients from previous step, containing 54 activities schedule within 6 weeks, was conducted in the study group while the control group was received regular nursing cares. After the end of the program, the study group had mean scores of the functional ability (85 score) and self-esteem (29.3 score) higher than that of the control group and also mean scores of the negative symptom scale were lower (7.4 score) than that of the other group.
Conclusion The integrated rehabilitation program for chronic schizophrenic patients could improve scores of function & social ability, self- esteem and decrease negative symptoms scores.
