Smoking Behavior and Related Factors of Junior Students who Studying at Secondary School that Located in Khon Kaen Province

Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study aims to investigate smoking behavior and related factors of junior students who studying at secondary school that located in Khon Kaen Province. Questionnaires with 0.67 to 1.00 of an IOC score, 0.70 of KR-20, and 0.79, 0.82 Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient of attitude and contributing factors of smoking behavior respectively. 219 participants were allocated questionnaires by a stratified random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, median, standard deviation, maximum and minimum were used to illustrate general characteristics while OR and Chi-Square with 95% CI were utilized to elucidate a correlation.

Results showed that 18.26% of sample group have being had smoking experience, a main motive was challenge face (72.5%), more than half (62.5%) smoked ready – made cigarettes, one stick was frequently found (37.5%), around half (52.5%) smoked on occasion and lower than half (45.0%) acted when get together with friends, habitual smoking area was restroom (40.0% ), cigarettes acquisitiveness were buying themselves and sharing of friend (35.0%). Focused on buying behavior, buying place was a grocery store (50.0%) and higher than half (67. 5%) bought separated rolls. Turn to related factors, there were six significant statistics factors, gender (p-value=0.001), expenses (p-value=0.004), smoking attitudes (p-value= 0.004), perception of smoking recommendation in school (p-value=0.042), difficult access was only one of enabling factors found (p-value=0.001) and close friend was one of Reinforcing Factors found (p-value=0.001).

Suggestion: School policy and life skill campaign should be organized for smoking prevention.
