Abstract

This quasi-experimental study with a two - groups pretest - posttest design aimed to measure the effects of a health literacy program on salt and sodium consumption among patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Thirty patients receiving care at a sub-district health promoting hospital in Mueang District, Mahasarakham Province, were recruited and assigned to either the experimental group or the control group (n = 15 each). The experimental group received an 8-week health literacy program on salt and sodium consumption. Data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, a salt and sodium consumption literacy scale, a salt and sodium consumption behavior scale, and a blood pressure monitor. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test.

After the intervention, the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher levels of salt and sodium consumption literacy and better salt and sodium consumption control behaviors compared to baseline and the control group (p-value <0.05). Systolic blood pressure in the experimental group was significantly lower than baseline and the control group (p-value <0.05).

However, no significant differences were observed in diastolic blood pressure and urinary sodium levels between two groups. The health literacy program effectively improved knowledge and behaviors related to salt and sodium consumption, resulting in better systolic blood pressure among patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Healthcare provider should consider implementing this program for hypertension prevention and management in community setting.
