This study aimed to (1) examine the situation and risk factors of road traffic injuries and fatalities among children and youth in Sakon Nakhon Province, (2) develop an appropriate prevention model, and (3) evaluate its effectiveness. The research was conducted in three phases: situational analysis, participatory model development, and a trial implementation with 50 youths aged 15-24 years over an 8-week period. Research instruments comprised (1) a road safety survival knowledge test (CVI = 0.84, KR-20 = 0.84) and (2) a survival thinking skills assessment (CVI = 0.86, Cronbach's α = 0.88). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and content analysis.
The findings revealed that, in Phase 1, the 15-19 age group had the highest injury rate (3,000-3,500 per 100,000 population), with males being 3.28 times more likely to be injured than females. Most accidents (80-85%) involved motorcycles. Key risk factors for fatality were non-helmet use (OR = 3.68) and alcohol consumption prior to driving (OR = 2.34). In Phase 2, the “SKN-RTI Youth Model” was developed based on the Human Factors framework, comprising six core components: risk management, self-limitation awareness, situational awareness, decision-making skills, hazardous attitude modification, and stress and fatigue management. In Phase 3, the trial implementation demonstrated significant improvements: knowledge scores increased from 17.76 to 27.90 (p <0.001), and thinking skills scores increased from 38.42 to 54.28 (p <0.001). Notable behavioral changes included helmet use, situational assessment, avoidance of mobile phone use while driving, trip planning, and avoidance of alcohol consumption prior to driving. Participants reported the highest level of satisfaction with the model (Mean = 4.68 out of 5).
In conclusion, the SKN-RTI Youth Model demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing knowledge and thinking skills, and in reducing risky behaviors related to road safety among children and youth. The model can be appropriately adapted and scaled up for implementation in other areas.
