Factors Associated with The Quality of Life among Family Caregivers of Dependent Older Adults in Khok Pho Chai District, Khon Kaen Province

This cross-sectional analytical research aimed to study factors associated with the quality of life among family caregivers of dependent older adults in Khok Pho Chai District, Khon Kaen Province. The sample consisted of 251 family caregivers, using a multi - stage random sampling method. The data were collected from March to June 2024 using the WHOQOL BREF THAI. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were used.
The findings showed that the majority of the sample were female 82.07%, 50 - 59 years old 56.18%, marital status 78.49%, graduated from primary education 65.74%, occupation in agriculture 52.19%, average monthly income was 5,000 - 10,000 baht. Most of them had insufficient income 88.05%. The dependent older adults were mostly home bound 77.29%. Family caregivers of the dependent older adult had overall quality of life score at a moderate level. The factors that were significantly associated with the quality of life were: 1) marital status (ORadj = 3.69, 95%CI = 1.30 - 10.47, p-value = 0.014), 2) income adequacy (ORadj = 3.60, 95%CI = 1.26 - 10.24, p-value = 0.016), 3) Underlying diseases of dependent older adult family caregivers (ORadj = 4.79, 95%CI = 1.60 - 14.33, p-value = <0.001), and 4) Caregiver burden of dependent older adult caregivers (ORadj = 14.90, 95%CI = 5.71 - 37.61, p-value <0.001). Other factors were found to be statistically insignificant.
Suggestion: The relevant agencies should promote the quality of life of the family caregivers according to important factors, including: building a support network for family caregivers without a spouse, supporting income and reducing the burden of care costs, organizing a system of health check - ups and prevention of congenital diseases in caregivers, and developing skills to care for the elderly with dependency conditions to be more effective.
