Abstract

Background: Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus is a primary cause of chronic kidney disease, which imposes significant physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts. Therefore, promoting health literacy serves as a crucial approach to encouraging appropriate self-care behaviors for chronic kidney disease prevention.

Objective: To study the effect of a health literacy enhancement program on self-care behaviors for chronic kidney disease prevention and clinical outcomes in older adults with Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes in Bang Krok Sub-district, Ban Laem District, Phetchaburi Province.

Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental, one group pre-test post-test design. The sample consisted of 30 older adults with uncontrolled type 2 Diabetes. These individuals received a 10-week health literacy enhancement program. Data were collected using a self-care behavior questionnaire for chronic kidney disease prevention, alongside laboratory results of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test.

Results: The findings revealed that the participants’ self-care behavior scores and estimated glomerular filtration rate were significantly higher than those before the intervention (p<0.05). Additionally, the mean hemoglobin A1c levels decreased after the intervention, but this change was not statistically significant.

Conclusion: A health literacy enhancement program was effective in improving self-care behaviors for chronic kidney disease prevention and enhancing the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among older adults with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.
