Abstract

Introduction: The changes in physical, psychological, and social in older adults can shape their individual experiences and the perception of self-worth.

Research objectives: This study aimed to explore and describe the meaning of self-worth a from the live experiences of older adults living in urban areas.

Research methodology: A phenomenological approach was employed. Fourteen participants aged 60 years old and over from an urban setting were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis.

Results: The interviews revealed 4 main themes regarding the meaning of self-worth: 1) role and responsibility; 2) independence and dignity; 3) social participation; and 4) internal factors and spirituality.

Conclusions: Urban older adults construct self-worth by reflecting on meaningful life experiences, drawing on past achievements, maintaining social connections, and accepting life’s realities within an evolving urban environment.

Implications: The conclusions drawn from this study can serve as a guidance for developing social activities and activities that enhance the potential and self-reliance of older adults, ultimately preserving their sense of self-worth and dignity.
