Abstract

Introduction: The recurrence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female adolescents is steadily increasing, resulting in significant physical, psychological, and social consequences.

Research objectives: To examine the effects of an Information–Motivation–Behavioral Skills (IMB) Model-based program on the prevention of recurrent STIs among female adolescents.

Research methodology: This study employed a quasi-experimental, two-group design with three measurement periods: pre-intervention, post-intervention, and a 4-week follow-up. The sample consisted of female adolescents (aged 18 – 24) diagnosed with and receiving treatment for STIs. They were divided into an experimental group and a comparison group (n = 31 each). The experimental group received the IMB Model-based program, consisting of four sessions delivered at one-week intervals. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires with content validity and reliability verified by experts. Statistical analyses included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA.

Results: The experimental group demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in STI prevention knowledge, attitudes, perceived self-efficacy, and preventive behaviors compared to the control group, both immediately post-intervention and at the 4-week follow-up (F = 117.42, F = 29.18, F = 92.06 and F = 46.28).

Conclusions: This study demonstrates that delivering specialized information, fostering internalized motivation, and providing targeted skill development significantly enhances STI prevention knowledge, attitudes, perceived self-efficacy, and preventive behaviors among female adolescents.

Implications: These findings provide a strategic guideline for healthcare providers to implement the IMB Model-based program aimed at preventing recurrent STIs among female adolescents.
