Introduction: Thai acupressure can relieve muscle pain, but its effects on cognitive processes related to pain and fatigue are limited. Accuracy of pressure-point locations may also influence effectiveness across different body types and practitioners.
Research objectives: To design and evaluate the appropriateness and safety of an anatomical Thai acupressure program for pain and fatigue relief and sustained attention enhancement in working age adults with trapezius myalgia.
Research methodology: This study was the first phase of a 6SQuID-based program development using qualitative methods. Data were collected from documents and an expert panel of eight specialists in anatomy, Thai traditional medicine, therapeutic massage, and neurology. Data were analyzed using categorization and content analysis to synthesize a consensus-based program.
Results: The program was refined based on expert suggestions, adding points to cover the head and trapezius, specifying point locations using anatomical landmarks, and specifying pressure and duration. It includes 29 points with anatomical references, was designed for 45 minute sessions, twice a week for 4 weeks.
Conclusions: The program is appropriate and safe, sufficient for proceeding to Phase 2 to evaluate its effectiveness on pain, fatigue, and sustained attention.
Implications: The program should be further developed by adjusting pressure levels to suit the body type and physique of each recipient.
