Introduction: Stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a stage at which kidney deterioration can still be slowed if patients maintain appropriate dietary and fluid consumption behaviors. However, many patients lack adequate nutritional self-management skills, which can lead to an accelerated progression to end-stage renal disease.
Research objectives: To examine the effects of a self-management program on dietary and fluid consumption behaviors and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) among patients with stage 3 CKD.
Research methodology: A quasi-experimental study was conducted using a two-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 46 patients with stage 3 CKD, selected through simple random sampling and equally assigned to the experimental group (n = 23) and the control group (n = 23). The intervention was delivered over 12 weeks. The experimental group received a nutrition self-management program along with a self-management guidebook, while the control group received routine nursing care. Data collection instruments included a general information questionnaire, a baseline data recording form, and a dietary and fluid consumption behavior assessment form. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyze general data, and group comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test.
Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly higher mean scores in dietary and fluid consumption behaviors and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) compared to the control group (p < .01).
Conclusions: The self-management program was effective in promoting appropriate dietary and fluid consumption behaviors and in slowing kidney deterioration, resulting in improved glomerular filtration rate (GFR) among patients with CKD.
Implications: Nurses should apply this program to modify the behaviors of patients with other chronic diseases in order to slow kidney function deterioration.
