Introduction: Stroke is the second leading cause of illness after cancer, and its incidence has been rising steadily. Among stroke survivors, approximately one-third suffer from permanent disabilities, leading to long-term dependence on caregivers. This growing burden underscores the vital role of caregivers in delivering ongoing care and support.
Research objectives: This study aims to develop a competency enhancement program for caregivers of stroke patients and to compare the caregiving competencies of these caregivers before and after participating in the program.
Research methodology: A quasi-experimental design with a pre-posttest two-group design. The comparison of mean knowledge scores and caregiving competencies before the experiment between the experimental group and the control group was conducted using an Independent t-test. The comparison of scores before and after the competency enhancement program in both groups was conducted using a Paired t-test.
Results: The results showed that the experimental group had statistically significant differences in mean knowledge and caregiving competency scores (p < .001 and < .05, respectively).
Conclusions: The program effectively enhanced caregivers' knowledge and competency in caring for stroke patients.
Implications: Healthcare professionals should apply the programs in care settings. It can improve caregiver competency and knowledge, which can lead to better patient outcomes.
