A Study of Oncology Nurse Specialist Competencies, Cancer Regional Cancer Hospital of Ministry of Public Health

Abstract

Introduction: Determining the oncology nurse specialist competencies, cancer regional cancer hospital will lead to improving the performance of cancer specialist nurses which enhance the quality of treatment and nursing services.

Research objectives: To examine the competencies of oncology nurse specialists in the regional cancer hospital under the Ministry of Public Health.

Research methodology: This descriptive research applied the Delphi technique to gather 20 experts through three rounds of data collection. The process included 1) interviewing experts on oncology nurse specialist competencies in regional cancer hospitals; 2) analyzing responses based on content analysis of interview data to assess oncology nurse specialist competencies.;
and 3) administering and statistically analyzing a questionnaire based on the second round of data.

Results: The competencies of oncology nurse specialist in regional cancer hospitals, Ministry of Public Health included 10 competencies with,  70 sub - competencies following 15 items on specialized cancer nursing practice, 9 items on teaching and educating, 7 items on palliative and end – of - life care, 6 items on symptom management, 6 items on cancer promotion and prevention, 6 items on communication, 6 items on law and ethics in culturally appropriate care, 6 items on cancer counseling, 5 items on evidence - based practice, and 4 items on nursing technology and informatics.

Conclusion: The competencies of cancer counselling and nursing technology and informatics have significantly enhanced the competencies of oncology nurse specialist in the future.

Implications: Nurse administrator should apply the results of this study by developing the evaluation tool and improving the competencies of oncology nurse specialist.
