Introduction: Influenza is an acute respiratory infectious disease commonly found in children aged 0 - 5. In Phayao Province, caring for Hmong children in this age group with influenza has revealed that their parents have limitations in communicating in Thai. Influenza is an acute respiratory infection commonly found among Hmong children aged 0 - 5 years. Preparing parents with limited Thai language proficiency is crucial to ensure they have the knowledge and readiness to care for their children.
Research objectives: 1) To compare the knowledge scores of Hmong guardians of children under 5 years old regarding influenza, before and after they were exposed to educational animated cartoons, and 2) to assessed the caregivers' satisfaction with the animated educational materials.
Research methodology: This quasi - experimental study was a one - group pretest - posttest design. The sample consisted of 25 Hmong guardians of children under 5 years old with influenza, selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The instruments used in the study were: 1) animated cartoons in the Hmong language titled “The Influenza in Children”, 2) a demographic data collection form, 3) a knowledge test administered before and after the use of the animated cartoon, and 4) a parent satisfaction assessment form. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t - test statistics.
Results: The knowledge scores regarding influenza in children among the sample significantly increased (t - 7.129(24), p < .001) after using the animated cartoons. Additionally, satisfaction with the animated media was rated as highest (M = 4.51, SD = .68).
Conclusion: The animated cartoons in the Hmong language can serve as effective educational tools in this context.
Implications: Using animated cartoons as educational tools for the guardians of Hmong children can help them to prevent illness, reduce incidence, and decrease the severity of influenza complications in children under 5 years old.
