Introduction: Patients with end-stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis must have appropriate food consumption behaviors for improving nutritional status.
Research objectives: To investigate the effects of the individual and family self-management program on food consumption behaviors and nutritional status among patients with end-stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis.
Research methodology: A quasi-experimental study with a two-group pre-posttest design was used. The participants were 32 patients who received hemodialysis and their caregivers at Kumphawapi Hospital, and their caregivers, divided into two groups of 16 each. The experimental group received the Individual and Family Self-Management Program based on Ryan & Sawin's framework composing of 1) promoting knowledge and beliefs, 2) self-regulation development, and 3) social facilitation. The control group received routine nursing care. Data were collected using a demographic data recording form, a food consumption behavior assessment form, and the Malnutrition Inflammation Score. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and comparative statistics.
Results: After the experiment, the experimental group had significantly higher scores in consumption behavior compared to before receiving the program (p < 0.01) and compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The nutrition levels of the experimental group differed significantly from the control group (p < 0.05), but did not differ from their levels before receiving the program.
Conclusions: The individual and family self-management program has proven to be effective in changing consumption behavior and promoting improved nutritional status.
Implications: Nurses who will implement the individual and family self-management program should receive training to effectively utilize the program.
