Drowning of Children under 5 Years Old: Problem, Causal Factors, and Solutions
Keywords:

Introduction: Drowning of children under 5 years old in Thai society occurs continuously, causing both physical and mental trauma, including death among children, and impacting family quality of life. Understanding the problem status, causal factors and solutions can encourage relevant individuals to implement effective prevention measures.
Objective: To present the problem status, causal factors and solutions for drowning of children under 5 years old through a synthesis of published research studies.
Key issues: Drowning of children under 5 years old in Thai society most likely occurs in water sources in or around living areas. The important causal factor is the drowning preventive behavior of caregivers, which involves closely supervising children and managing the environment in their living areas. The causal factors for such behavior stem from factors within the child’s caregivers, which are consistent with the health belief model. To solve the problem of drowning of children, caregivers should be encouraged to adopt desirable drowning preventive behavior, using various methods, integrated with activities provided by public health service centers in their areas.
Conclusions: It is essential to solve the problem of drowning in children by strengthening drowning preventive behavior among caregivers. Public health workers in primary public health service centers play a crucial role in efficiently preventing and solving this problem.
Implications: The presented solution can be used to develop an implementation guideline or conduct a research study with specific methods in areas with a high incidence rate of drowning.
