Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that cannot be cured. Health belief patterns are important in changing the behavior and knowledge of patients with type 2 diabetes.
Research objectives: To examine the effects of an educational program based on health belief patterns on self - care behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Research methodology: This study was a quasi - experimental research with one group pre - posttest design. The participants consisted of 33 patients with type 2 diabetes, aged 35 years and over, selected by simple random sampling. The research was conducted over a period of 12 weeks. The instruments of this study were personal information questionnaires, diabetic knowledge questionnaire, Health Belief Pattern Perception Questionnaire, and Health Behaviors Questionnaire.
The program tools used in the experiment included an education program based on the Health Belief model for a group of patients with type 2 diabetes. Data were analyzed using mean, percentage, standard deviation, and paired t - test.
Results: The study revealed that after receiving the program according to the Health Belief model, the sample group had significantly increased knowledge and behavior mean scores compared to before attending the program with statistical significance (p < .001).
Conclusion: This program can increase knowledge and behavior of patients with type 2 diabetes. Health care facilities and interested parties can use the program to apply to caregivers of other chronic diseases. Nurses can organize activities to enhance the knowledge and behaviors of diabetic patients.
Implications: Nurses should utilize this program to positively influence the behavior of patients with type 2 diabetes.
