Introduction: Preparation before childbirth surgery is crucial for preventing complications during surgery, reducing anxiety, and increasing self-care knowledge among pregnant women before and after surgery.
Research objectives: To examine the effects of the pre-operative preparation for elective caesarean section using VDO media on anxiety and knowledge in pregnant women.
Research methodology: This study used a quasi-experimental design. The sample group consisted of single pregnant women aged 20 years and above receiving scheduled childbirth surgery services, with a total of 30 participants divided into experimental and control groups, each with 15 participants. The research instruments included: 1) video media for preparing for scheduled childbirth surgery appointments, 2) an anxiety level measurement questionnaire, and 3) a knowledge measurement questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test for comparing the score of anxiety and knowledge between groups.
Results: At post-test, the experimental group had significantly lower mean anxiety scores during the intervention and significantly higher mean knowledge scores than before the intervention (p < .05). The experimental group also had significantly lower mean anxiety scores during the intervention than did the control group (p < .05). Additionally, the mean score of hidden anxiety between the experimental group and the control group (M = 37.67, SD = 7.23; M = 34.93, SD = 7.39, respectively) and the mean scores of knowledge related to self-practice (M = 18.68, SD = 1.55; M = 17.93, SD = 2.28, respectively) were no statistically significant differences (t = 1.02, df = 28, p>.05; t = 1.31, df = 28, p>.05, respectively).
Conclusion: Using video media to prepare for scheduled childbirth surgery appointments helps increase knowledge and reduce anxiety in pregnant women.
Implications: Video media for preparing childbirth surgery appointments should be implemented to provide knowledge and reduce anxiety before scheduled childbirth surgeries in hospital settings.
